On 5 June 2015 the Department of Occupational Therapy conducted an Evidence Searchathon. Ten lecturers from the Department participated in searching for information on a number of academic databases. Healthcare managers and therapists from the clinical field of occupational therapy submitted a large number of wide-ranging practical questions to these ten lecturers. They needed evidence-based information on which to base their healthcare interventions. This transfer of evidence is seen to assist clinicians, managers and consumers to strengthen their decision-making process on a variety of levels relevant to intervention and management in the field of Occupational Therapy.
Mrs Annamarie du Preez from the Frik Scott Medical Library assisted in the process of accessing information databases. A short overview was given on the generic characteristics of academic information databases, followed by an explanation of the basic skills for searching. A hands-on session followed where the identified topics were searched for on databases such as Cochrane Library of Systematic Reviews and databases on the EBSCOHost platform (including CINAHL and MEDLINE).
