Chakalaka and chicken liver meal-in-minutes

Chakalaka is a traditional South African vegetable relish. Chef Súne Niemand shows you how to make your own fresh chakalaka - quickly and cheaply. Add cooked chicken liver to the chakalaka and serve on a whole wheat bread roll, pap or samp to make a balanced meal in minutes.


You will need:

1 can of chakalaka

OR make your own fresh chakalaka:

1 carrot – grated finely
½ onion - chopped
½ tin of baked beans
1 teaspoon of curry powder
1 tablespoon of brown onion soup powder

Add the grated carrot and chopped onion to the baked beans.

Mix in a teaspoon of curry powder.

Mix a teaspoon of brown onion soup powder with a bit of water to make a paste.

Add this paste to the rest of the ingredients and mix.

Wash a few chicken livers, cook it in 15 ml oil in a pot or pan over medium heat. Add pinch of salt.

Mix the livers and chakalaka.

Spoon into a breadroll for a grab-and-eat option.  Or eat with pap, samp or  rice.
