 New president for Convocation

Prof. Johan Grobbelaar of the Department of Plant Sciences has been appointed as the new president of the convocation of the University of the Free State (UFS). He replaces former Judge of Appeal Joos Hefer whose five year term expired.

The convocation consists of all permanent academic staff, all permanent support services staff, and students who have obtained a formal qualification from the UFS.

Judge Hefer referred to the changes that have taken place at the university over the past few years in his speech and said it was an honour to have served in this position. “We reached a situation where one can express satisfaction about what has happened at the university.”

The sought-after Kovsie Alumni Awards which are awarded annually to alumni of the University of the Free State will be presented at a prestige gala dinner on Friday 7 September 2012.

The Kovsie Alumnus of the Year Award is presented to an alumnus with outstanding achievements at national or international level. This year, this honour is bestowed upon Mr Jaco Loubser for his contribution to and development of the South African film and television industry.

The Cum Laude Award honours alumni for outstanding service or achievements at local, national or international level in his/her specific career area.  Profs. The Alumni Award for exceptional service at the UFS is made to any person who has rendered, or is still rendering outstanding service to the University of the Free State. This year we honour two well-known persons in the UFS community, Prof. Hendri Kroukamp and Adv. Wessel Oosthuizen. The former is recognised as an NRF-rated scientist, his mentorship role towards students and as subject specialist and world leader in his specific field, while the latter is honoured for his outstanding contribution to the financial sector of South Africa and the rest of the world. His passion for promoting financial planning in higher education has accorded the UFS international recognition.

The Kovsie Ambassador Award is awarded to any person who constantly renders exceptional service to the university and who has a passion for the university. Prof. Matie Hoffman is honoured for his passionate service and contributions to the UFS, as well as for his enthusiasm as lecturer, his scientific knowledge and skills, as international speaker and as funding mediator to extend his discipline.
