NAVAL HILL PLANETARIUM

The University of the Free State (UFS) is implementing an innovative and exciting project, namely the establishment of a ‘Centre for Earth and Space’ on Naval Hill in the centre of Bloemfontein.

The 86-year old Lamont-Hussey Observatory on Naval Hill, also known as the Sterrewag Theatre, is home to the planetarium. The planetarium is the first component of a proposed Centre for Earth and Space.

The planetarium is the first of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa. Once completed, the multi-functional facility will also include an interactive astronomy museum and exhibit building, a Science and Sculpture Garden and a building to promote environmental education and conservation. The Centre for Earth and Space is one of the lead projects of the UFS and the campaign to source funding is driven from the office of the Vice-Chancellor.

ASSOCIATION OF FORMER SRC PRESIDENTS (AFSP)

The University of the Free State (UFS) made history during the weekend of 9-10 August 2013 with the establishment of its Association of Former SRC Presidents (AFSP) – the first association of its kind after the merging and incorporation of public institutions in 2003–2004.

Twenty-two former SRC presidents attended the inaugural dinner to launch the association on Women's Day, Friday 9 August 2013, and recognised especially the attendance of all four female presidents that previously chaired the SRC. Other guests included former rectors and chairpersons of the UFS Council, as well as chairpersons of the Alumni.

Some of the former SRC presidents which attended the function, from lefto to right: Roel Meyer, Bloemfontein campus 1979; dr More Chakane, Qwaqwa campus 1990 and the deputy Chairman of the AFSP, dr Anchen Laubscher, first female chairman of the Bloemfontein Campus 2003 and Prof Voet du Plessis, Bloemfontein Campus 1967/8.
