Pygmalion

The Department of Drama and Theatre Arts at UFS will be presenting a production of Pygmalion at the end of this month, in the Wynand Mouton Theatre, from 29-31 March, 19:30.

Pygmalion is one of English drama’s classic plays. Written by George Bernard Shaw in the early 1900s, the play is based on an ancient Greek myth in which a sculptor, Pygmalion, falls in love with one of his statues, which then comes to life.

In Shaw’s story, a professor of phonetics, Henry Higgins, takes a bet that he can train a poor flower girl to speak “proper” English, and pass her off as a duchess. Eliza Doolittle, the subject of this experiment, must learn to improve her manners, language and social skills. But what does she lose along the way?

Pygmalion is a gentle comedy that makes a statement about class structures and the role of women in society – it isn’t hard to draw parallels with South African social conditions. Shaw’s famous play was converted into a popular musical in the 1960s, and many people will recognize the story of Pygmalion in My Fair Lady.

Kabelo Sebolai lecture

The Unit for Language Facilitation and Empowerment, in collaboration with the Department of Afrikaans and Dutch, German and French, cordially invites you to attend a lecture presented by Dr Kabelo Sebolai

When: 17 March 2017 12:00 – 13:00

Where: FGG 377, Bloemfontein Campus

Title: Academic language testing in English: A possible springboard for realizing linguistic human rights in South African higher education

Academic language ability is believed to be a factor in the low graduation rates currently faced by higher education institutions in South Africa. As a result, universities have had to offer academic language interventions aimed at improving students’ ability to engage better with the language demands of university education. In turn, this has led to the use of tests of academic language ability for placing students appropriately in such interventions. One such test has proven to provide definite information about student readiness for academic education with regard to language and by extension, the potential for them to succeed in their studies. The aim of this presentation is to demonstrate how this finding can help inform initiatives to promote teaching and learning in languages other than English and Afrikaans. It will report the results of a predictive validity study that involved two tests of academic literacy at a university of technology and will link such results to the effort made by a traditional academic university to promote individual and institutional multilingualism. On the basis of this, the presentation will argue for valid academic language testing as a springboard for mother tongue instruction in pursuance of linguistic human rights in South African higher education.

Dr Kabelo Sebolai possesses BA ED and BA Hons (English literature) degrees from the North-West University and a Master’s degree (English literature) from the University of the Free State (UFS). He then graduated with another Master’s degree in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) from Northern Arizona University in the USA and a PhD degree in Language Practice (Applied Linguistics) from the UFS. Dr Sebolai started his career as an academic language tutor in the Career Preparation Programme of the UFS and was later appointed as an English lecturer at the Qwaqwa Campus of the UFS and the Welkom Campus of the Central University of Technology (CUT), respectively. Subsequent to this, he was appointed as the coordinator of the Academic Literacy Programme (ALP) at the Bloemfontein Campus of the CUT. Dr Sebolai had also served as the Research Lead for academic language testing in the Centre for Educational Testing for Access and Placement at the University of Cape Town for two years until he was appointed as Deputy Director for Language and Communication Development in the Language Centre of Stellenbosch University with effect from January 2017. His research interest has mainly revolved around academic literacy curriculum development and testing on which he has published numerous articles in accredited journals.
